Uhuru Torch 2025 and Nehemia Foundation Tanzania:
A Light That Never Fades
Every nation has a unique symbol of patriotism, unity, and hope. For Tanzania, that symbol is the Uhuru Torch—a flame that is carried annually across various regions, illuminating development projects, encouraging accountability, and promoting national solidarity.
The Uhuru Torch was first introduced in 1961 by the Father of the Nation, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, with the mission to spread peace, love, and unity after the country gained independence from colonial rule. Since then, the annual relay has grown to symbolize more than just a national event—it represents a collective commitment to inclusive development and social harmony.
In 2025, the Uhuru Torch embraced a new global perspective, carrying a slogan that aims to ignite hope across the world:
“Shine the Torch to Bring Hope and Empowerment Where There is Despair.”
This message did not remain in words alone—it came to life through the actions of various organizations across the country. One such exemplary organization is the Nehemia Christian Aid Foundation Tanzania, which for over two decades has been a catalyst for social transformation through education, access to clean water, agriculture, and support for orphans.
This year, the foundation strengthened its impact by partnering with strategic allies such as the One Stop Help Center (OSHC) at Jordan University College (JUCo), an initiative deeply committed to child protection and welfare.
Arrival of the Uhuru Torch in Morogoro – A Message of Hope and Accountability
On April 11, 2025, the Uhuru Torch officially arrived in the Morogoro Region from the Coast Region. At a grand welcoming ceremony held at the Nanenane Grounds, government officials, representatives from various institutions, students, and local residents gathered in anticipation.
The torch relay aimed to highlight 70 development projects valued at approximately TZS 18.5 billion, including schools, health centers, roads, and clean water initiatives.
Among these projects, one that deeply touched the hearts of many was Agape Children’s Village, a child care center managed by the Nehemia Christian Aid Foundation. It was a historic moment for the children of Agape, who participated in a national event for the first time, showcasing their talents through traditional dances, songs, and speeches promoting peace and unity.

Nehemia Foundation Tanzania: A Legacy of Community Service
Founded in 1996 as a branch of the Nehemiah Christian Relief Organization headquartered in Frankfurt, Germany, Nehemia Foundation Tanzania is dedicated to uplifting the lives of Tanzanians through sustainable, inclusive development.
The foundation’s vision is clear: “To empower Tanzanians to become self-reliant, live with dignity, and contribute to the development of their nation.”
For over 25 years, the organization has actively addressed social challenges with practical, impactful solutions. Its core areas include:
- Clean water
- Quality education
- Orphan care and child protection
- Rural agriculture and food security
- Environmental and health development
Nehemia does not merely offer charity—it builds long-term capacity within communities, planting the seeds of resilience, dignity, and prosperity.
Key Projects of Nehemia Foundation Tanzania
1. Agape Children’s Village – A Refuge of Hope
Agape Children’s Village serves orphans and abandoned children by providing:
- Safe housing
- Nutritious meals
- Formal education (primary and secondary)
- Spiritual and moral upbringing
- A loving, family-like environment
During the 2025 Uhuru Torch relay, the Agape children stood proud, proving that, despite adversity, they are the future leaders of the nation. Their performance moved many in the audience, including dignitaries who were visibly touched by their presence.
One child said in a speech:
“The torch has reached us. It has illuminated the darkness around us and revealed the path to our dreams. We are here as children of the nation, ready to build and protect it.”
2. Clean Water Projects: Life for All
In regions like Loltepes, Agape Village, and Kemondo, Nehemia has developed water infrastructure such as:
- Deep boreholes
- Rainwater harvesting systems
- Water filtration facilities
One such water project in the Msufini village was officially launched during the 2025 torch relay. For a community long deprived of safe drinking water, this was a moment of joy and liberation.
A resident, Mama Amina, testified:
“Before this project, we had to walk two hours to fetch water. Now, we have a borehole right here. Our children no longer miss school due to water issues. This is true freedom.”
3. Empowering Farmers and Sustainable Agriculture
Nehemia has initiated modern farming programs in rural areas by:
- Providing quality seeds
- Training in organic fertilization
- Teaching value addition and marketing skills
- Facilitating savings and loan groups (VICOBA)
The Kemondo project stands out, where over 60% of participating households have increased their income in three years. These families have transitioned from subsistence farming to profitable agribusiness ventures.
4. Education: The Bedrock of National Development
Through its Bethania Schools project, Nehemia has invested in education by constructing schools with:
- Modern classrooms
- Libraries and science labs
- Qualified and passionate teachers
- Safe and nurturing learning environments
These schools consistently perform well in national exams, with many graduates receiving scholarships for higher education, both locally and abroad.
A Unique Collaboration: Uhuru Torch and Nehemia Foundation
This year’s Uhuru Torch relay marked a new chapter. For the first time, the government directly collaborated with a non-governmental organization in launching development projects. This partnership demonstrated that sustainable development requires contributions from all sectors.
During a speech at one of the project inaugurations, the Morogoro Regional Commissioner remarked:
“We view Nehemia as a close partner. They have done remarkable work in supporting the government’s development agenda. This year’s torch has truly shone its light.”
Community Response: A New Wave of Enthusiasm
Beyond the project launches, the torch event sparked a new sense of civic engagement:
- Women formed food processing and tailoring groups
- Youth launched environmental cleanup campaigns
- Schools initiated leadership and peace clubs
- Agape children were invited to give motivational talks in other schools
Conclusion: Shine the Torch, Illuminate Lives
The 2025 Uhuru Torch event was not just a ceremonial relay—it was a call to action. Through Nehemia Foundation’s collaboration with the government, the torch illuminated regions that were once in metaphorical darkness: in terms of infrastructure, education, economy, and even spiritually.
The slogan, “Shine the Torch to Bring Hope and Empowerment Where There is Despair,” found a real-life embodiment in the villages and people touched by Nehemia’s work.
A Call to the Nation: We Are All the Torch
The torch is not just a physical flame carried each year—it is symbolic of each of us. It is me and you choosing to make a difference, caring for others, uplifting the vulnerable. Together, we can write a new story of Tanzania—one of unity, justice, and inclusive progress.
✨ “The Uhuru Torch is not an event—it is a lifelong movement. A light of hope that is rekindled every day through our collective actions.”
